Creating an abstract painting can feel like performing a high wire act without a net. With nothing to reference outside of myself—no model, no vista, no bowl of pears or apples—I only have my own thoughts and experiences, things learned and unlearned in my life in art, to rely on. Bringing color, line, and form into balance is a wobbly process. These elements are slippery. "Too much blue” in one area of a painting might not need to be changed but simply balanced by putting a different color or shape nearby, or maybe by adding even more of that same “too much blue!” The choices and decisions—some intuitive, some analytical—can be daunting. Eventually, though, if all goes well, I’ll come to a comfortable place of equilibrium and put my brushes down.
